Mèze Underwater Trail: Essential Information
Here are the main things to know before snorkeling in Thau Lagoon.
Route
250 metres, 5 observation stations and a depth reaching about 3 m.
Equipment
Mask and snorkel. Fins can make swimming easier, but they are not essential.
2027 season
The tourist office currently announces installation from 15 June to 15 September 2027. Check the dates before your visit.
A 250 m Route Starting from Taurus Beach
The Mèze underwater trail starts at Taurus Beach. The first installations are located a short distance from the shore and lead you through the trail’s five observation stations.
From Buoy to Buoy in Thau Lagoon
The route is approximately 250 metres long. Each station is marked by a buoy fitted with a handrail, allowing swimmers to pause and view the underwater educational panel.
The trail remains in relatively shallow water, reaching a maximum depth of about 3 metres. It is designed to be explored from the surface with a mask and snorkel.
This is not a scuba-diving route, but an activity designed for snorkeling in Thau Lagoon.
How Does the Trail Work?
From the beach, swimmers reach the first buoys and then move from one station to the next at their own pace.
There is no fixed duration: the time spent in the water depends on your swimming ability, the conditions on the day and how long you spend exploring each station.
The 5 Stations of the Mèze Underwater Trail
Each station explores a different aspect of the lagoon. The route combines the discovery of natural habitats with an introduction to the traditional activities of Thau Lagoon.
Seagrass Beds
Seagrass meadows provide an essential habitat for many species living in the lagoon.
Rocky Seabed
Rocks, algae and small organisms create a habitat very different from the sandy areas.
Sandy Bottoms
The sandy seabed is also home to discreet marine life, which the underwater educational panel helps visitors identify.
Lagoon Fishing
One station presents traditional fishing techniques that have long been used in Mediterranean lagoons.
Shellfish Farming
The trail also explains oyster and shellfish farming, an iconic activity of the Thau Lagoon area.
Educational Panels Directly Underwater
One of the distinctive features of the trail is that the information is not limited to displays on the beach. Each station includes an underwater educational panel dedicated to the habitat being explored.
Swimmers can observe the underwater landscape, read the information and then try to identify the characteristic habitats and species of Thau Lagoon.
What you actually see will naturally vary according to the season, weather conditions, underwater visibility and the presence of wildlife.
What Can You See on the Mèze Underwater Trail?
The trail offers a better understanding of the biodiversity of Thau Lagoon and the different habitats found in this Mediterranean lagoon.
Wildlife That Can Be Easy to Miss
The trail’s panels introduce several species found in Thau Lagoon, including the noble pen shell, the long-snouted seahorse, various blennies and mullet.
Seagrass beds also play an essential role. They provide shelter, feeding grounds and nursery areas for many lagoon species.
Keep in mind, however, that the trail is set in a natural environment. A species shown on an educational panel may therefore not necessarily be visible during your visit.
Seagrass beds, sand, rocks and underwater structures create different habitats, each supporting its own wildlife and plant life.
As in any lagoon, underwater visibility depends on factors such as weather conditions, wind and the state of the water on the day of your visit.
A Different Way to Discover Thau Lagoon
The route is designed to be explored from the surface, without scuba equipment, making it an ideal activity for snorkeling in Thau Lagoon.
No Scuba-Diving Experience Required
The educational panels are installed just below the surface and the buoys are fitted with handrails. You therefore do not need any scuba-diving experience to follow the trail.
You do, however, need to be comfortable in the water, as the route takes you away from the shore and part of it lies outside the supervised swimming area.
Can You Visit with Children?
With a child, the decision should depend primarily on their swimming ability, the conditions on the day and the accompanying adult’s ability to supervise them at all times.
The trail is in open water and part of the route lies outside the supervised swimming area. The activity should therefore be adapted to each child’s abilities.

What Equipment Do You Need for the Underwater Trail?
The equipment required is simple. The trail is specifically designed to be explored from the surface.
These are the essential items for comfortably viewing the educational panels, seabed and marine life along the route.
Fins are not essential, but they can make swimming easier and reduce effort along the 250-metre route.
Adapt Your Visit to the Conditions
Before entering the water, check the condition of the lagoon, the wind and underwater visibility. If conditions are poor or you do not feel sufficiently comfortable, it is better to postpone your swim.
Fishing and Shellfish Farming Underwater
One of the distinctive features of the Mèze trail is that it does not focus solely on biodiversity: the route also introduces visitors to the traditional activities of Thau Lagoon.
An Educational Shellfish-Farming Structure
A miniature installation helps visitors understand the principle of the tables used for shellfish farming, an activity closely associated with the landscape of Thau Lagoon.
The trail also presents traditional lagoon fishing and its techniques, highlighting the long-standing relationship between local people, their trades and the lagoon.
This aspect makes the trail particularly interesting: visitors discover both a natural ecosystem and a living local culture.
What You Need to Know Before Swimming the Trail
The trail is freely accessible and each swimmer is responsible for their own safety. Particular care is required on the section located outside the supervised swimming area.
The trail is accessible from the beach, but you must be able to swim and feel comfortable in open water.
Wind, water movement and visibility can significantly affect swimming conditions from one day to another.
