Swimming and activities

Plage du Taurus in Mèze: swimming, families and activities

Located on Rue de la Méditerranée, Plage du Taurus is one of the main beaches in Mèze. Set directly on the shores of the Thau Lagoon, it offers open views across the lagoon and is particularly convenient for spending several hours by the water.

This beach in Mèze is well suited to families and has a lifeguarded swimming area during the summer season. For the 2026 season, the lifeguard station is scheduled to operate from 1 July to 31 August, from 11 am to 7 pm.

An accessible beach for visitors with reduced mobility

Plage du Taurus has several facilities designed to make access to the waterfront easier. Four accessible parking spaces are available nearby, together with a boardwalk, adapted toilets and a Tiralo beach wheelchair available from the lifeguard station.

A convenient beach for a full day out

Plage du Taurus offers more than swimming. Visitors can also enjoy the lagoon through water sports available nearby, particularly through the Yacht Club de Mèze.

This makes it easy to combine swimming, walking and water-based activities during the same day.

Good to know: lifeguard hours and some facilities may vary according to the season or local conditions. Before swimming, check the information displayed at the lifeguard station.
Discover the lagoon differently

The Mèze underwater trail from Plage du Taurus

Plage du Taurus has another attraction: it is the starting point for the Thau Lagoon underwater trail. This educational route allows visitors to discover the lagoon’s biodiversity directly in the water using only a mask and snorkel.

A 250-metre underwater trail

The trail extends for approximately 250 metres and includes five observation stations.

Each stage introduces visitors to characteristic Thau Lagoon habitats, including seagrass beds, sandy bottoms and rocky areas, as well as traditional fishing and shellfish-farming activities.

A free way to explore the lagoon

Each station is marked by a buoy fitted with a handrail and an underwater information panel.

The route is free of charge and does not require diving experience. A mask and snorkel are enough to explore the trail in suitable conditions.

For 2026, the underwater trail is scheduled to be installed from 15 June to 15 September. Part of the route lies outside the lifeguarded swimming area and is therefore unsupervised, even when the lifeguard station is open.

Visitors should adapt their activity to their swimming ability, weather conditions and the state of the lagoon.

To learn more about the route, its five stations, local biodiversity and safety information, see our complete guide to the Mèze underwater trail .

Near the harbour and town centre

La Plagette in Mèze: a beach near the harbour and town centre

La Plagette beach in Mèze is located at 23 Quai Baptiste Guitard, immediately beside the harbour and town centre. Smaller than Plage du Taurus, it offers a different atmosphere: here, a swim can easily be combined with a walk around the harbour, lunch on a terrace or a visit to the historic centre.

This beach in Mèze lies directly on the Thau Lagoon and offers open views towards Sète. Its central location makes it one of the easiest beaches to reach on foot when staying in the centre of Mèze.

A family-friendly beach

La Plagette is particularly well suited to a family day by the water. The lagoon is generally calm and entry into the water is gradual. Children’s play areas are also located close to the beach.

Part of the area also benefits from the shade of a small pine grove, which can be particularly welcome on the hottest summer days.

Lifeguarded swimming in summer

La Plagette has a lifeguard station. For the 2026 season, lifeguard supervision is scheduled every day from 1 July to 31 August, from 11 am to 7 pm.

Toilets are available near the children’s play area. As at any lifeguarded beach, check the information provided by the lifeguards and follow the signs displayed on site before entering the water.

An accessible beach for visitors with reduced mobility

La Plagette also has several facilities designed to improve access for visitors with reduced mobility. Tourist information lists three accessible parking spaces, adapted toilets and facilities, an accessible route to the beach and a Tiralo beach wheelchair available from the lifeguard station.

The harbour and La Plagette area therefore make it possible to enjoy the shores of the lagoon while remaining close to shops and the main services in Mèze town centre.

Facilities and practical information for this beach in Mèze can also be found on the official Hérault Tourisme page .

La Plagette or Plage du Taurus? If you want to stay as close as possible to the harbour and Mèze town centre, La Plagette is particularly convenient. For a day focused more on water sports and the underwater trail, Plage du Taurus is generally the better choice.

Restaurants, terraces and walks around La Plagette

One of La Plagette’s main advantages is its location. Several restaurants and terraces can be found directly opposite the area or just a few minutes away on foot. It is therefore easy to combine swimming with lunch or dinner by the water without needing to use the car.

A waterfront promenade also runs alongside the beach and leads towards the Mèze harbour . Its location makes it easy to continue your day with a walk along the quays and through the streets of the historic centre.

If you are arriving by car, free parking is available opposite the area. Other parking options are listed in our guide to parking in Mèze .

Visiting Mèze with your dog

Dog-friendly beach in Mèze: where can your dog swim?

Looking for a dog-friendly beach in Mèze? The town has a designated area where dogs are allowed to swim.

Mèze’s dog-friendly beach, known locally as the Cani-plage, is located opposite the tambourin court, on Chemin de l’Escouladou , beside the Thau Lagoon.

The area allows visitors travelling with their dogs to enjoy the lagoon without using the main beaches, where dogs are not permitted.

Dogs can swim off the lead

Within the designated swimming area, dogs are allowed to enter the water and swim off the lead. This gives them a dedicated place to cool down during hot weather.

Once out of the water, dogs must be put back on the lead.

A designated area with specific rules

The existence of the Cani-plage does not mean that dogs are allowed on every beach in Mèze. The town states that dogs are prohibited on the other beaches in Mèze throughout the year .

Owners must also clean up after their dogs to help keep the site and the shores of the lagoon clean.

Visiting Mèze with a dog? Head directly to the Cani-plage, the designated dog-friendly beach on Chemin de l’Escouladou. Plage du Taurus and La Plagette should not be used as dog beaches.

This designated area provides a useful option for visitors travelling with their pets. It makes it possible to enjoy the Thau Lagoon while protecting Mèze’s main swimming beaches.

The rules for the Cani-plage are explained by the Town of Mèze . As with any local regulations, it is advisable to check the signs on site when you visit, particularly in case access or swimming conditions have changed.

The Cani-plage complements the beaches in Mèze for visitors travelling with a dog who also want to enjoy the Thau Lagoon during their stay.

Swimming in the lagoon

Can you swim in the Thau Lagoon in Mèze?

Yes, you can enjoy swimming in the Thau Lagoon in Mèze. La Plagette and Plage du Taurus both have designated swimming areas where visitors can enjoy the waters of the lagoon.

Each is a beach in Mèze with its own atmosphere and surroundings. Unlike a beach directly on the Mediterranean Sea, the landscape here is that of a lagoon: the water is generally more sheltered and views extend across the Thau Lagoon, with Sète and Mont Saint-Clair visible from several parts of the Mèze shoreline.

Official monitoring of bathing water quality

Bathing waters are subject to official health monitoring during the swimming season . Water samples are taken regularly to monitor microbiological water quality at designated bathing sites.

Before swimming, particularly after significant weather events, check the information and any temporary notices displayed on site.

A different swimming experience from the Mediterranean

Swimming in the Thau Lagoon offers a very different setting from the large beaches along the Mediterranean coast.

The lagoon is surrounded by harbours, natural areas and shellfish-farming zones, all of which form an essential part of the local landscape.

A day at a Mèze beach can therefore easily be combined with a walk, a water-based activity or a visit to the town’s heritage sites.

Good practice: during the summer, use the designated and lifeguarded swimming areas, follow the signs displayed on the beaches and check the current swimming conditions.

When can you swim in the Thau Lagoon?

Summer is naturally the busiest period. The lifeguard stations at Plage du Taurus and La Plagette operate during July and August according to the hours displayed on site.

Health monitoring of the designated bathing sites covers a broader period of the summer season.

Outside lifeguard supervision periods, access to the shores of the lagoon remains possible, but swimming is then at your own risk. Weather conditions, wind and any temporary local restrictions should always be taken into account.
